Teaching Hospital in Chaos: Is De-politicization the only way out?

As the issues surrounding the Teaching Hospital and the Institute of Medicine continued to grip the national sentiment often eclipsing the election of Sushil Koirala as the new prime-minister of Nepal;  Dr. Govinda KC's fast-onto-death continues into the third day.

With  the Faculty Doctors, Nursing Staff, Resident Doctors and Health Science and Medical Students all against the appointment of the now 'villainous' Dr. Ratindra Shrestha as the new director of the Teaching Hospital, he could only resume office from a nearby restaurant where official papers were 'smuggled' to. The effigies of  Dr. Ratindra Shrestha and the Vice Chancellor Hira Bahadur Maharjan were smeared with soot at the premises of the hospital.

De-politicization of Medical Sector ?

Today as the medical and nursing fraternity and the health sciences students sat together, issues were raised on the over-politicization of health sector and its negative impacts. In the 'Save IOM Working Committee' meeting held in the hospital premises in the afternoon, speakers slandered the irresponsible stance of the TU officials. The committee has decided on mass resignation of IOM Officials and the entire faculty if the demands raised by Dr. Govinda KC are not met within 24 hours.

Resident and Intern Doctors have already issued statements declaring non-cooperation in running the Out Patient Services. The Faculty doctors have issued a similar warning if the demands are not met in time.

Later at a students' mass meeting, the participants overwhelmingly vented their anger over the unusual silence and overt disregard of the leadership of  major partisan student wings and have warned complete de-politicization of students at Institute of Medicine. In their bid to push for an autonomous institute, new identity cards were issued renouncing the authority of Tribhuvan University.

A candle-lighting  was organized afterward in solidarity with Dr. Govinda KC's non-violent revolution and for his health.
